Nearly 6,500 “kids” between the ages of five and forty-something jumped into the music-and-visual game of the multinational animated crew Gorillaz on Monday night at the Palacio de los Deportes. About 40 percent were actual kids and teenagers, joined by skaters, cool twenty-somethings, and adults minding their offspring. They danced, shouted, waved their hands, and stared in fascination at a screen for two hours, fully aware that behind that flat stage lurked a semi-anonymous band of humans playing live.
A Mexico Fan said: "Everything seemed normal — as normal as things can be at a Gorillaz concert. Suddenly, something happened that no one was expecting… to the right of the stage appeared none other than Eminem, stepping out to greet the crowd. The screams erupted instantly, and after the brief salute, he disappeared back behind the stage. …Then came the moment for “Clint Eastwood,” and Eminem himself took over the rap. The same thing happened again during “Rock the House,” where he even threw in a short Spanglish mini-song. They left the stage once more, but returned yet again to perform “911,” once again featuring Eminem on vocals.

"They did come to promote their first album. If I remember correctly, the show took place sometime around March, and they played at the Palacio. It was a weekday show and, honestly, it wasn’t very well attended for several reasons. One of them was the lack of promotion—many people didn’t even know who Gorillaz were at the time. There might have been a few hardcore Blur fans who knew and traveled to see them.
On the old Gorillaz MX forums, I remember someone posting their personal story and mentioning that they were selling T-shirts similar to the ones 2D wore during Phase 1 (something like the “Captain” style—I don’t remember the exact model), supposedly “signed” by him. There were also a lot of kids attending with their parents, and there were issues with the sound during the show.
There’s also the well-known story that Damon’s passport was stolen while he was in Mexico, and legend has it that this incident is even referenced in the song “ROTO.” In the Bananaz DVD, as part of the bonus content, there’s footage from their visit to Mexico, including a trip to the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon—although Damon doesn’t appear in those scenes.
Additionally, there were promotional G-Sides stickers distributed by EMI. I was lucky enough to keep one of the two different designs that existed."
