Erected on a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean, Plastic Beach was the most desolate location known to man; the furthest point from any landmass on the planet.
It was here that Murdoc chose to build his new plastic palace and embark upon a fresh new recording, something that would eventually become the towering Gorillaz sonic monstrosity entitled... “Plastic Beach”.
Basic sonic foundations were laid and before long he had the outline for a new & fantastic epic Long Playing record. Extra collaborators were shipped in to add additional colours and spices; All ‘Grade A’ cohorts in the form of Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Lou Reed, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Bashy and Kano, Chicago horn sections, Syrian orchestras, zithers, farfisas and more...
To announce the arrival of the new album and the release of the first single Stylo a promotional video was constructed. But this would be no ordinary promo. Whilst driving through the deserts of America Murdoc, 2D and Cyborg Noodle were attacked, dramatically shot at by a mystery bounty hunter…who looked strangely familiar. This footage of the assault, captured by Murdoc’s personal documentary crew, was subsequently used to accompany the Stylo single.
On Melancholy Hill was the second single from Plastic Beach. Once again additional footage was assembled to accompany the music. Footage that did finally reveal not only that the original Noodle was safe but that Russel was definitely on his way back, and this time was bigger than ever. His frame was that of a swollen giant…
