The Mountain is deeply shaped by intense personal experiences, particularly the grief of losing loved ones — his parents and close family members — and how that loss changed his perspective on both life and music. Albarn explained that the pain “had to come out” through the album, and that they found comfort in the ways cultures such as Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh traditions approach death. The record also incorporates the voices of artists who are no longer with us, adding an additional emotional and spiritual layer to the project.
