15 Years Of

Press Release

Thank You for 10,000 Followers on Instagram — Celebrating 15 Years of Gorillaz Expresso

Gorillaz Expresso proudly celebrates reaching 10,000 followers on Instagram — a milestone that wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support and passion of our community.

The project first began in 2011 with a simple goal: to create a dedicated space to share news, stories, and special content for Gorillaz fans. Years later, on October 29, 2015, we expanded our journey by launching our official Instagram account, opening up new ways to connect with fans around the world.

This month, we’re also celebrating 15 years of continuous activity and dedication — fifteen years of sharing updates, preserving memories, and building a space for fans across the globe.

Every like, comment, and message reminds us why we started — for the love of the music and the community that brings it to life.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for continuing to grow with us. This is only the beginning.

From Vault: Interview 2002

This summer, animated rock stars 2D, Noodle, Murdoc and Russel -- collectively known as Gorillaz -- will swing into three-dimensional form via a line of action figures. Art Asylum Vice-President Adam Unger says his company pounced at the opportunity to release Gorillaz toys because, "It was something that had really never been done before to some extent. The music was way cool to begin with, the characters looked great, and we have all been fans of (illustrator) Jamie (Hewlett)'s for some time now, so really, it all fit together nicely."

A Figures.com Exclusive Interview with the group itself!

Meeting the animated characters for one-on-one question and answer session was physically impossible. Talking to them over the phone was also out of the question. But chatting with cartoon rock stars Gorillaz via e-mail was completely feasible. With the help of band publicist Lisbeth Cassaday (Hi, Lisbeth!), the following discussion took place in cyberspace. Gorillaz vocalist 2D, bass guitarist Murdoc, and drummer Russel (lead guitarist Noodle wasn't available) speak about their forthcoming line of Art Asylum action figures, their movie, and -- of course -- monkeys.

Figures.Com: You have your first line of action figures coming out this year. Will they have any special features, like kung-fu grips or rocket launchers?

Murdoc: I've been avoiding talking about this like the black plague, if I can be perfectly honest with you. I mean, it's hardly very rock 'n' roll, is it? You never heard Motley Crue banging on about their toys, did you?

I'll come clean, though, I've got a few dolls, y'know. The KISS ones (by McFarlane Toys) were alright, I even had a little wheelchair made for my little plastic Peter Criss so that he could make it to his (drum) kit easier. I've got this other doll that has loads of "Special Features," it can please me with its satisfying... (I'm afraid the rest is unpublishable. Sorry, kids:) --Jeff Saylor)

Figs: If your action figures and a bunch of "Star Wars" action figures got in a fight, who would win?

2D: It depends who owned them. If the person with the 'Star Wars' figures had a sledgehammer, some petrol, and matches or something, then they'd win, I can tell you this much!

Murdoc: A'right, Einstein, we get the point!

Russel: My figure ain't about fighting! Such toys teach children to accept a militarised world. They teach children that people who look or think differently should be defeated and that war and killing are acceptable ways of dealing with conflict. They create the impression that might is right, and in doing so, denigrate kindness, conciliation, co-operation, skill, and thoughtfulness toward others.

Murdoc: Too right, your figure isn't about fighting! You're a big man, but you're out of shape! You feeling a bit right on today, Russ?

I don't envy the interviewer's job. There's nothing worse than Russel with a political correctness beef in his bonnet. Makes for a good laugh from my point of view, though. Nothing funnier than an over educated Hip Hopper laying down the law.

Figs: Do you collect toys or any sort of memorabilia?

2D: I bought the complete set of the 'Seven Samurai' action figures when we played in New York. I've also got a jar full of my old toenails; it really stinks.

Figs: If human entertainers are eventually replaced by cartoons, what do you foresee replacing cartoons? Monkeys?

2D: What do monkeys have to do with anything?

Murdoc: Oh I dunno, about as much as toenails at a guess.

Figs: Will the world eventually be taken over by monkeys, like in "Planet of the Apes"? If so, is that a good or bad thing? Discuss.

Russel: I'm afraid you're missing the point! It's already happened, after the extinction of dinosaurs the planet was indeed taken over by apes: Us. (Pierre Boulle's original French novel) LA PLANETE DES SINGES has more in common with the social commentary of Jonathan Swift and the scientific pessimism of H. G. Wells than any of the other science fiction published in the early '60s. Boulle's themes deal with the human pretension of believing that we are at the centre of the universe and with the nature of intelligence. The apes in the book are simply humans in disguise, with human foibles and fears. It's also an amazingly chilling satire: At the same time as you're laughing at the apes' pompous statements that they are the only creatures with souls, you realise that we've heard these statements before from our own theologians and philosophers.

Murdoc: Told you. Go on Russ, lets see who else you can bore!

Figs: Supposedly if you put 100 monkeys at 100 typewriters for 100 years, one of them will type a Shakespeare play. Do you blame the current state of popular music on monkeys secretly being employed to write songs? Or are the problems associated with "Nu metal" and teen pop actually due to "Lack Of Monkeys"?

Russel: It's an infinite amount of monkeys at an infinite amount of typewriters and the play they'd come up with is Hamlet . Like Douglas Adams wrote in his book The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy , "There's an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk to us about this script for Hamlet they've worked out."

This joke is no more ridiculous than the initial concept itself as the universe is not infinite, but what this underlines is that Shakespeare's work could not come into creation without the intervention of the artist's intelligence. This has lead some people to come to the conclusion that as Shakespeare's birth within a finite universe is just as unlikely and random a possibility, then this itself is proof for a creative intelligence behind the universe. As to your second point, I blame the current state of world affairs on the monkeys that we have put in charge. In contrast with this madness, "Nu Metal" and pop pale in comparison.

Murdoc: I'd give up with the funnies if I were you. Nobody's listening to either of you.

2D: Yeah, and the monkeys. I really don't know what anyone's going on about now.

Figures.com: Will the members of Gorillaz ever pursue solo careers? If so, what would each of you like to do outside of the band?

Murdoc: I of course am the only person in the band who stands a fart's chance in hell of making it on the outside. Be it in metal, rock or new jack swing, the world is my instrument waiting for me to be ready to play. I'm not blowing my own trumpet, as there's an orderly queue waiting to do that for me.

Figs: Are you folks going to do a movie? And if you had to cast humans to portray you, who would each of you choose?

Murdoc: Yep, we've started work on a script. It's got the working title of "The Celebrity Harvest." There's no one out there who could play me unless of course we did it like our live show with the actors behind the screen. Then I guess Gene Hackman would fit the bill, or Pacino.

Figs: Will you ever release Gorillaz comic books? Please?

Murdoc: When it's time to flog us like a dead horse who knows what level of dross we'll authorise? Until then, we'll keep on with the records. Oh, and the movie, not forgetting the toys, of course.

Figs: When will you be back on tour in America?

Russel: We don't have any plans to at the moment but as soon as we do we won't be keeping it secret. We're thinking about playing Russia next.

Figs: I really enjoyed your concert here in Seattle. Got any fond memories of Seattle?

Russel: I think it was in Seattle that an interviewer remarked to me that neither Napoleon nor (the German synthesizer band) Kraftwerk ever pretended to be monkeys. What is it with you guys and simians?

Murdoc: He's off again. Who rattled your cage, Kong boy?

Figs: Finally, is there any credo or manifesto which guides the band?

2D: I've got the first edition Greedo figure. That's the sort of thing you're interested in, isn't it? Oh and monkeys, I nearly forgot. Well, I've got a one of (Monkees guitarist) Mike Nesmith's original green woolly hats, too. Cool or what!?

Toumani Diabaté recording studio in Mali with the support of Damon Albarn

Press Released

We’re proud and grateful to announce today the opening of a new recording studio in Kirina, Mali, made possible through the support of Damon Albarn, frontman of Blur and Gorillaz, and dedicated to the legacy of the Grammy-award winning Malian musician Toumani Diabaté.

Damon Albarn personally attended the inauguration of the studio in Kirina on December 13, 2025, alongside government officials, members of the Diabaté family, and representatives from surrounding communities. Damon has supported PFCF’s music school in Kirina for the past nine years and fully funded the construction of the studio facilities. Built using local resources and traditional mud bricks, the studio is entirely powered by solar energy and equipped with high-end recording equipment and microphones, including a 40-channel analog console generously donated by Albarn. The Toumani Diabaté Studio is located at the École de Musique de Kirina, a free music school founded in 2010 by the Playing For Change Foundation, along with Diabaté’s brother, Mahamadou Diabate. The school serves more than 200 students each week, offering music, dance, and academic classes with the mission of preserving, promoting, and passing on Mali’s rich musical and cultural heritage. With Albarn’s previous support, PFCF has also helped provide access to clean water for more than 2,000 community members in Kirina, and the upkeep of a local maternity ward, in line with PFCF’s mission to create positive change.

We are deeply grateful for Damon’s support on this project and are committed to honoring Toumani’s legacy by bringing life—and great music—into and beyond the walls of this new recording studio.

Damascus Press Released

“Damascus (feat. Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey)” is the latest brand new track from Gorillaz, the fourth from the band’s upcoming new studio album The Mountain, out February 27th 2026 on the band’s own new label KONG. Listen to “Damascus” CLICKING HERE.

Written by Damon Albarn, Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey and recorded in Damascus, London, Devon, Mumbai and New York, “Damascus” features Syrian superstar of Bedouin music Omar Souleyman alongside rapper and singer Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def). Already firmly established as a fan favorite, the track received its live debut at the special surprise performance of The Mountain at London’s Copper Box Arena in September, ahead of an ecstatic reception at both Madrid’s Gaia Festival and Together For Palestine at Wembley Arena, an event which saw Damon Albarn and the Gorillaz live band also joined on stage by The London Arab Orchestra.

About OMAR SOULEYMAN:

Omar Souleyman’s 5th studio album pays homage to Erbil — the city in Iraq that offered solace and embraced Souleyman during recent uneasy times. The move to Erbil came rich with new experiences and friendships best celebrated in joyous songs dedicated to a new chapter of life. Erbil’s 8 tracks see the Syrian wedding singer turned global electronic music icon again teaming up with his longtime keyboard player Hasan Jamo alo for an ever ambitious and forward thinking techno-meets-Dabke sound.

Beyond his move to Erbil, Iraq, the past several years have seen Omar Souleyman receive the GQ Middle East ‘Men of the Year’ award in 2022 (and cover feature), noted massive live performances in Saudi Arabia, United Emirates and the wider Middle East, as well as returning to the USA after a long 6 year break with performances in Los Angeles and New York City, all while his touring continued strong throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Souleyman, who has collaborated with Björk and Four Tet, began his career as a prolific wedding singer, releasing nearly 500 live albums before civil war broke out in his native Syria in 2011. He then moved to Turkey and in 2013 released his Four Tet-produced debut studio album Wenu Wenu via Ribbon/Domino, which NPR called “…a jam so visceral, thrilling and intense as to make the mysterious matter of earthly borders seem hardly worth the time to contemplate.” His 2015 sophomore album Bahdeni Nami (various producers including Four Tet, Gilles Peterson and Modeselektor) garnered widespread critical praise as well as his two Mad Decent releases: 2017’s To Syria, With Love and 2019’s Shlon, placing Omar Souleyman firmly in the canon of global electronic music.

Souleyman has bolstered his growing status as a world and electronic music icon establishing an extensive international following after touring widely and performing at major festivals including Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Pitchfork Paris and Roskilde. In 2013, he performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Norway.

About YASIIN BEY:

Yasiin Bey is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor. His career in hip hop started under the now-forsaken stage name ‘Mos Def’ in 1994, and in 1998 he formed the duo Black Star alongside rapper Talib Kweli, releasing their eponymous debut album, featuring the singles “Definition” and “Respiration”. In 1999 he released his solo debut, Black on Both Sides, which was widely praised, and followed by The New Danger (2004), True Magic (2006), and The Ecstatic (2009), all to critical and audience acclaim. In 2022 with Talib Kweli they released a new long-awaited Black Star album, No Fear of Time, produced by Madlib, on the podcasting platform Luminary.

The editors of About.com listed him as the 14th greatest rapper on their “50 Greatest Rappers of All Time” list. Some of his top hits include “Oh No”,”Ms. Fat Booty”,“Umi Says” ,and “Mathematics”. Over the course of his career yasiin bey has collaborated with many of the most prominent talents in popular, jazz and hip-hop music, including Madlib, Kanye West, De La Soul, Gorillaz, Robert Glasper, Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, Derrick Hodge, Freddie Gibbs, Erykah Badu to name but a few.

Prior to his career in music, yasiin bey was a child actor with roles in television films, sitcoms, and theatre. Since the early 2000s, he has appeared in the films Something the Lord Made, Next Day Air, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 16 Blocks, Be Kind Rewind, The Italian Job, The Woodsman, Bamboozled, and Brown Sugar, and in television series such as Dexter and House. He is also known as the host of Def Poetry Jam, which aired on HBO between 2002 and 2007.

In 2015, yasiin bey created Negus, is a 28 minute listening experience consisting of 8 compositions recorded in London, produced by Lord Tusk, Steven Julien and Acyde. Negus is presented as an immersive sound installation, that can only be experienced in person. The recording is unavailable for purchase via digital or physical platforms. Bey designed the multi-track recording as an installation to encourage people to be fully present while listening to it.

Yasiin bey has worked with long-time collaborators Dave Chappelle and Talib Kweli to create ‘The Midnight Miracle’ a podcast released on Luminary bringing the three personalities together in a new genre of audio encompassing music, conversation, debate and celebrity guests. The show won Apple Podcasts’ ‘Best Shows of 2021’, and was cited as one of the New York Times’ ‘Best 10 Podcasts of 2021’. Seasons 1 and 2 of the show were recorded during Chappelle’s legendary 2020 Summer Camp in Ohio, and later in New York, London and other locations around the globe, including a live performance at the 2022 Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa, CA. Later in 2022 he performed with Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock on their record-breaking live US arena tour, and in 2023 he performed a 25-date tour in the United States alongside Erykah Badu.

More recently, yasiin bey has toured the UK, Europe and Australasia performing his tribute to the late, great MF DOOM ‘BEYONDOOM’, and alongside Talib Kweli as Black Star. He has also developed his activities in design and fashion with brands including Jacques-Marie Mage eyewear, Fueguia Fragrances, and others in apparel to be announced in 2026. He has forthcoming studio album Forensics, due to be released in 2026, collaborating with producer and DJ The Alchemist, and other multi-media projects in the pipeline.

‘The unknown is exciting’

As the virtual band release ‘Damascus’, the fourth single from their upcoming album The Mountain, Dazed is granted the exclusive first look at this esoteric chapter in their career.

Hewlett: With India, everywhere you look, something is going on. Every square inch of space is taken up with madness and beauty and craziness. We took a photographer with us, and I just got her to photograph everything, because trying to draw those backgrounds would have taken me forever. So I drew the characters into that world, and did a lot of collaging. I think, if you’re an artist or in any way visually inclined, and you’re not inspired by India…

Albarn: I mean, that inevitably connected with me too. When I was a kid, my parents played me a lot of classical Indian music. I listened to more classical Indian music than I did the Beatles. When my dad was dying, I put on [Ravi Shankar’s] ‘Morning Raga’ in his hospital room, and he came back to life again for literally 20 minutes. Musically, India is extraordinary. It’s a cacophonous place, which is always good to make a record.

PIRATE RADIO 2

[ring… ring ring… ringing…] anyone there? Don’t tell me Cyborg’s messing with the connection again. [static]

There we go. Once again, you have all done a marvelous job at giving Cyborg data for frowns, jeers, and eyerolls! …Much to the Engineers dismay.

Kidding, we tolerated little ole Cyborg’s mopiness well enough. I don’t think even she was prepared for that overload of negativity! We bore witness to many rocks being kicked by the shore, vehement “no’s” at the request of simple tasks, and her running away when it was time for charging… You don’t think she was sad or anything, right? Couldn’t be, we’ve never written code or collected data for that, and the Green Man himself sure as hell never set her up with such a fallacy!

Anyways, her protests are sounding more reasonable thanks to her three new DISAPPROVAL emotions. She’s become quite triumphant in expressing her likes and dislikes! The APPROVAL and DISAPPROVAL emotion cards have been a solid foundation for her newfound drive to express and interact.

But why stop there? This week we’re calling on our artists to deliver the most unique — and perhaps relatable Emotion Cards to cyborg’s cold metallic chest. It’s time for FREE EMOTION, it’s up to you to decide which emotion you’ll portray! Cyborg will be happily surprised!

Shhh! I just spotted her up on the dock. What’s she got in her hand? Sounds like she’s mumbling something as well. Wait, what’s this about five horizontal howler monkeys spinning in wheatgrass? Pandemonium? Two-spot Cichlid? Cyborg, are you feeling well? [creak!] Hey wait, you don’t have to be scared, where are you running off to now?!

Ah well. Submissions are open, and you have a week to come up with something. Go on, crack open those noggins! Variety is key!

12 nov. 2025

PIRATE RADIO 1

[ring, ring, ring, ring, pick up the phone…]

Good day to you Engies; you have all done a fantastic job in helping our Cyborg find her emotional footing…

Well, she’s been very, very enthusiastic. Almost too enthusiastic… probably because we hadn’t stabilized her APPROVAL just yet. Maybe some of you noticed in her conversations…? Hopefully you’ve kept up with her transmissions. Now that we’ve selected, harnessed, n’ tied down our three APPROVAL emotions, she’ll be a bit more moderate… like a woodpecker with a headache.

Back to business; you guys have been doing fantastic-o, now it’s time for our APPROVAL to shift over to DISAPPROVAL. Us engineers are looking for variety in this category - glum expressions, frowns, dislikes, FREAK-OUTS, boos, jeers, anger… enough with just a Smiley-Bot. You can't have your sun without a little bit of rain… so make it rain.

Submissions are open, you've got a week… hop to it! Get outta here! Scram!

What a week it had been for Cyborg.

This act of constant excitement and zeal was burning her out. Her brain and her heart—or at least, her chips and wires programmed to mimic a real brain and heart—were at their limits of overwhelm. She’d done so much in her frenzy of approval that she couldn’t even recall it all in detail anymore beyond a blur.

Am I even able to…feel fatigue?’ she wondered. Coming down off it all, she figured she must be because there was no other word to describe it. Tired and wired at once. High and low. A twitchy sensation she’d never quite felt before.

She tried to think of what humans might do for relief when they felt like this, and she gazed out a window to ponder. The sun was setting. The ocean lapped rhythmic whispers to her. Maybe…that was it?

When the others were still there, she remembered hearing them mention needing to “cool off” in tense moments. Maybe she needed to cool off too. And what could be cooler than the ocean?

Her boots squeaked against the building’s greasy old floor as she passed through a decrepit and peeling hallway to the nearest exit. After pushing against the rusted grinding of the door hinges, she stepped out onto the beach.

The sunset made the view pinker than usual, as if it all glowed warmly from within. The ground crunched like foam under her feet as she made her way toward the shining expanse of water that surrounded her home. Step by step, she waded into the ocean. Before she knew it, she was knee-deep. It truly was delightfully cold and relaxing. She closed her eyes and felt herself start to smile as the sea grounded her racing mind.

A splash of water to the face made her flinch, disrupting her silence, and she opened her eyes. What was that? A tail? She blinked the blurriness out of her vision.

It was a tail. And it belonged to a manatee that was swimming in lazy circles around her, flapping its fins in a quietly playful fashion. It nudged its head against her body and, without thinking, she reached out to pet it. The manatee responded to her affection with a friendly squeak that made Cyborg giggle.

After swimming another circle, the manatee bobbed its way to the nearest hill and heaved its body up out of the water until it reached the top. It looked in her direction from its new perch and made another soft chuffing noise at her.

Cyborg waded through the water after it to get a closer look. Its ocean-wet skin was almost shimmering in the waning sunlight. Looking up at the manatee, she waved at it. To her surprise, the manatee gave her another fin flap in return that looked curiously like it was waving back at her.

She felt her shoulders finally start to relax as she and her new friend communicated without words. She felt content and peaceful for the first time all week.

And she couldn’t help but to think that the manatee reminded her of someone she once knew, quiet but sturdy and kind.

THE GOD OF LYING PRESS RELEASE

“The God of Lying (feat. IDLES)” is the brand new track from Gorillaz, the third single from the band’s forthcoming new studio album The Mountain.

Written by Damon Albarn and Joe Talbot and recorded in London, Devon and Mumbai, with Ajay Prasanna on bansuri and percussion by Viraj Acharya, “The God of Lying” sees the IDLES frontman bring his maverick charisma to a dub-style vocal that delivers a list of questions and scant consolation to tap into the album’s underlying themes of societal and political unease.

Gorillaz frontman 2D said – “Can I tell you a secret? Doubt is very tiring but questioning things is really good for you.”

The Mountain is Gorillaz’ ninth studio album, an expansive sonic landscape of instruments and sounds, richly layered with voices, melodies and addictive beats, spanning a collection of 15 songs that embody the very essence of Gorillaz’ collaborative ethos.

The record features an extraordinary list of artists and collaborators including: Ajay Prasanna, Amaan & Ayaan Ali Bangash, Anoushka Shankar, Asha Bhosle, Asha Puthli, Bizarrap, Black Thought, Gruff Rhys, IDLES, Jalen Ngonda, Johnny Marr, Kara Jackson, Omar Souleyman, Paul Simonon, Sparks, Trueno and Yasiin Bey; as well as the voices of friends and collaborators who have gone before us, including Bobby Womack, Dave Jolicoeur, Dennis Hopper, Mark E Smith, Proof and Tony Allen. The Mountain is a playlist for a party on the border between this world and whatever happens next, exploring the journey of life and the thrill of existence.
